Body is a slightly opaque, pale golden-orange color, crowned by a small ring of stark white head. Aroma is mostly pale malt with a good bit of spice to it, pepper and pine from the aggressive hop profile. Palate is a big dose of piney, citrusy hops, tempered by some sweet pale malt and a funky, slightly sweet yeast character. Finish is rather dry, with a lingering hoppy bitterness. Body is a little thin for a beer as strong as this one, but is still substantial enough for the amount of flavor.

Gouyasse 6° - 33cl

Gouyasse 6° - 33cl
Ref: BB28061Z

Gouyasse is a artisanal blond beer, not filtered, not pasteurized and brewed in the respect of the tradition. It is refermented in bottle what gives him its semi-sparkling naturalness. Refreshing and containing 6% vol.alc., it is only manufactured starting from natural products: malt, hop, water and yeast.

Goliath (6% alcohol vol.) is a pure barley malt beer with no added spices and sugar. It is a high fermentation beer and is fermented a second time in the bootle to give it a natural sparkling taste. This light ale has a peachy colour with a fine, huge and creamy head. Its aroma is fruity (citrus) with a slight flavour of hops. Goliath is a slightly bitter and mellow beer, perfect balance of flavours. Its secret … the brewing according to traditionnal method, the character of the house yeast , the use of only prime and natural products. Goliath ? What’s the meaning ? Ath (Belgium), city of the giants, is a calm region full of tradition and folklore. Goliath means Gouyasse in patois from the « David and Goliath » legend and is one of the famous giants from Ath. The brewery situated at Ath decided logically to call their first beer Goliath.

Gouyasse Triple 1/3L

Gouyasse Triple 1/3L
Ref: BB28231Z

Goliath is 9% alcohol by volume, a little more red in the face than your average tripel (almost an amber, really), nicely balanced with a bracing hop note versus a solid malt wallop. Goliath is the only Tripel in Belgium that is all-malt without any sugar or other additives in. (Everyone else uses some sugar to ‘thin out’ their Tripels, which gives them alcohol, without the body that you normally get from malt.) That means Goliath starts out a bit sweeter than some, but over time, as the live yeast in the bottle do their work, it gets drier and more punchy. The first batch, after about half a year in the bottle, is about where we want it, but it will probably become a greater beer as time goes by. We recommend that you check in on Goliath every once in a while.

Glowing golden dark yellow with a small film of white lacing floating on the top. Sweet lemon wheat nose with some fuesal corn notes hidden behind an oversweet nutty banana aroma. Brewed by Alken-Maes for the Grimbergen abbey, this is a double dark beer, whose appearance and taste are a close approximation of an English brown ale. Rich ruby-brown colour, with an aroma comprising equal proportions of hops and something like fermenting marrow. It is sweet, lively on the tongue and easier to drink than its strength would suggest (which is considerably in excess of your average brown ale). The aftertaste is a lingering, mild malty flavour.
Clear dark ruby, almost a burgundy appearance, with a large-bubbled sandy head which subsides into a frothy layer with a few bubbles peaking through. Nose has some gingerbread spiced cherries, nice roasted strawberries and cherries in the flavor as well, with a big emphasis on apple cider. Peppy finish, finishes like apple juice.

Grimbergen Optimo 10°-1/3L
Ref: BB20606

This is a strong abbey-style beer from the Grimbergen monastery, brewed as an Easter ale but available all year. It has a rich, heavy, complex nose with malt, black treacle, petroleum, and possibly pepper. Flavour is quite sweet, chewy, cloying and puddingy, but the sweetness is counteracted by a malty, treacley bitterness. There is a fruity, port-like quality to the palate too, along with a cheesiness towards the finish, all of which suggests that this would make a good after-dinner beer.
Deep amber/chestnut colour, head that forms with much noise and effort but evaporates almost instantly. Moderate condition. Caramel, toffee, licorice and burnt brown sugar in the nose, with a suggestion of raspberry as it warms (Like a Liefmans Frambozen). Quite thin in the mouth, you seem to drink it by osmosis rather than swallowing. Hints of malt whisky, raisins and caramel but all quite delicate and flleeting. More whisky malt in the finish with alcohol coming to the fore and a hint of bitterness towards the end.

Beautifully grassy, yeasty, malty aromas, with some cherry as well. Undistinguished appearance, golden brown with small head which is persistent and adds a creamy quality. Flavor is all of the above with an excellent sour/bitter/malt/mineral balance. Smooth and rustic at the same time. Clean finish with some alcohol presence, not offensively so. Astringency at the level of a sour red ale? I think this one is underrated, its excellent and worth seeking out.
